Environmental sensing and data transmission

Substrata is developing communication technology that retrieves environmental sensor data wirelessly from the hardest-to-reach places, including deep soil. Its mission is to shape the future of environmental data collection by giving customers access to high-quality data that current infrastructure cannot deliver.

The problem is structural. Wireless sensor networks in agriculture still depend on architecture designed in the 1980s: buried sensors must be wired to a surface node, data quality degrades below fifteen centimetres, and surface nodes obstruct machinery, robots and automated systems. Growers are left making decisions on incomplete information.

Substrata's patent-pending module replaces that architecture with cordless, over-the-air transmission supported by AI for signal-strength automation. It retrieves data from a depth of 1.25 metres — more than ten times existing systems — supports sensor arrays above and below ground, and permits year-round field operation. Offered as an OEM solution to sensor manufacturers, development has been supported by McGill Agtech and the Area-XO mobility campus.
