Global food quality, access and environmental impact

Commonground is a global initiative established to improve food quality, equitable access and social impact within the boundaries of environmental flourishing. Its founding premise is that food is foundational to both human and ecosystemic health: food-related causes now account for more deaths than any other single factor, agriculture consumes water at roughly two and a half times the accepted planetary boundary, one third of the world's arable land has been lost in four decades, and food production is responsible for 34 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions.

The initiative's vision is to enhance human and planetary health, and its mission is to develop and implement strategies that improve access to healthy food while reducing its environmental footprint. Commonground is built on three integrated pillars: a social pillar of decentralised, community-centred farming; an economic pillar of income-generating and affordable food production; and an environmental pillar of net-positive, macrobiome-enhancing operations.

Structured as a multi-partner consortium — spanning design and engineering, modern farming, construction, research, social impact, retail and distribution, with the University of Leiden as research partner — the programme follows a staged incubation model of germination, growth and harvest, progressing from a grant-funded study through business case and design to a proof-of-concept facility.
